    Sign Definitions

Regardless of your current zoning district, it is important to understand certain terms in order to decipher the zoning code:

Accessory Sign:  Directs attention to information, identification or advertisements strictly incidental to a lawful use of the premises on which the sign is located.  Types include:

  • Wall Sign: any sign that is flat an attached against a building or other structure so that only ONE side is visible.

Ground Sign: any sign supported by braces placed at or on ground level – it is NOT attached to the building.

Illuminated sign: any sign in which characters, letters, figures, designs or outlines lit by artificial lights – including neon and interior light signs.

Projecting Sign: any sign attached to a building or other structure, allowing BOTH sides to be visible.  All projecting signs require Art Commission approval, in addition to zoning and building permits.

Awning Sign:  application of words, lettering and/or logos to an awning.  If lettering or logos appear on the side of an awning, it is considered a projecting sign and will require Art Commission approval.
