F-2001.1.1 Compliance: Tents and air-supported structures shall comply with this code and with Section [624.0] B-3104.0 of the [1990 BOCA National] building code. Exiting, aisles and seating shall be in accordance with the regulations of this code.

F-2001.2 Permit required: A tent or air-supported structure covering an area exceeding one hundred twenty (120) square feet (11 m2), including all connecting areas or spaces with a common means of egress or entrance, shall not be erected, operated or maintained for any purpose without first obtaining a permit from the code official.

F-2002.2 Exposed flames: Gasoline, gas, charcoal or other cooking device or any other unapproved open flame shall not be permitted inside or located within twenty (20) feet (6096 mm) of the tent or air-supported structure.

Exception: Approved small heating devices, such as alcohol burning devices in spill proof containers, shall be acceptable to keep precooked food warm.

F-2002.3 Lighting and electrical wiring: All lighting and electrical wiring shall be in accordance with NFiPA 70 listed in Chapter 44. Emergency lighting is required for structures used for public assembly with an occupant load of one hundred (100) or more persons and which are to be used after sunset.

F-2002.3.1 Spot lighting: Spot or effect lighting shall only be by electricity, and all combustible construction located within six feet (1829 mm) of such equipment shall be protected with approved non-combustible insulation not less than ¼ inch (6 mm) thick.

F-2002.6 Portable fire extinguishers: At least one (1) portable fire extinguisher with a minimum [4-A] rating of 2-A:10-B:C shall be provided for each two thousand (2,000) square feet (186 m2) or fraction thereof of floor area. Tents or air-supported structures which have equipment or devices for cooking or heating of food shall have a minimum of two (2) fire extinguishers, with one (1) extinguisher located behind the serving area. All fire extinguishers shall be prominently mounted.

F-2002.7 Heating or air conditioning devices: Devices designed to heat or air condition tents or air-supported structures are permitted provided that the units and their fuel and power supplies are located at least twenty (20) feet (6 m) from tents, air-supported structures and buildings, and ducts do not obstruct exits or aisles. Flammable and combustible liquid fuels shall be stored at least ten feet (3 m) from heating units. Barricades shall be provided around heating and air conditioning devices, their fuel or power supplies and ducts. While the units are in operation, at least[27] one trained person shall monitor their operation. Refueling shall only be performed when a unit is not in operation. (See Chapter 32 for requirements of flammable and combustible liquid storage. See Chapter 36 for requirements for liquefied petroleum gas storage.)

Exception: Electric heaters and air conditioning units shall be permitted adjacent to the outside of a tent or air-supported structure provided that the power source is placed at least twenty (20) feet (6 m) from any tent, air-supported structure or building.

F-2002.8 Cooking and heating of food: Cooking and heating of food shall be performed in a tent used exclusively for that purpose. The tent shall be at least ten feet (3 m) from other tents, air-supported structures and buildings. Ovens and ranges powered by electricity or compressed gas shall be permitted for cooking and heating of food in tents with the following restrictions:

1. Compressed gas cylinders shall not exceed forty pounds (18 kg) gas capacity and are limited to one (1) cylinder per oven or range. The cylinders shall be located outside and at least five feet (1.5 m) from any tent, air-supported structure, building or source of ignition.

2. Generators used to power electric ovens and ranges and the generator's fuel supply shall be located at least twenty (20) feet (6 m) from tents, air-supported structures and buildings.

F-2002.9 Smoking: Smoking is not permitted inside a tent or air-supported structure. "No smoking" signs shall be posted at all entrances and at conspicuous locations inside.
