M-1406.1 Labeled: [Gas-burning] Decorative gas-fired appliances designed for installation in approved solid fuel-burning fireplaces, [such as decorative gas appliances] shall bear the label of an approved agency and shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions [for the labeled equipment].

M-1406.2 Flame safeguard device: Decorative gas appliances [installed] for installation in solid fuel-burning fireplaces shall have the main burner ignition by means of a direct ignition device, an ignitor or a pilot flame to ignite the fuel at the main burner, and shall be equipped with a flame safeguard device. The flame safeguard device shall automatically shut off the fuel supply to a main burner or group of burners when the means of ignition of such burners becomes inoperative.

M-1406.4 Shutoff valves: Shutoff valves serving decorative gas-fired appliances shall be located outside of the fireplace firebox, adjacent to and in the same room as the fireplace.
