SECTION M-402.0 DEFINITIONS

Appliance (mechanical): A device or apparatus [-
including any attachments or apparatus designed to be attached -] which is
manufactured and designed to utilize [electricity, natural gas, manufactured
gas, mixed gas, liquefied petroleum products, solid fuel, oil or any gas as a
fuel for heating, cooling, ventilating, cooking or developing heat, light or
power.] energy and for which this code provides specific
requirements.

M-403.1 Labeling: All mechanical equipment and appliances
regulated by this code shall bear the label of an approved agency unless
otherwise approved in accordance with [Section M-107.0] the administrative
provisions of this code.

M-405.2 Wind resistance: Mechanical equipment and supports
which are exposed to wind shall be designed and installed to resist the wind
pressures determined in accordance with Section M-1611.0 of the building
code.
M-405.[2] 3 Seismic supports: Where earthquake loads are applicable
in accordance with Sections 1612.1 and 1612.6 of the building code, mechanical
equipment, piping and duct supports shall be designed and installed for seismic
forces in accordance with the building code.
M-405.[3] 4 Access: Access
shall be provided to all mechanical equipment, appliances, appliance controls,
gauges, burners, filters, blowers and motors.
M-405.[4] 5 Clearance:
Appliances shall be installed with the minimum clearances to combustibles for
which the appliance has been tested as specified by the
manufacturer.
M-405.5.1 Installation in confined spaces: An appliance
installed in a space that is not large in comparison with the size of the
appliance therein, shall be labeled for installation in confined spaces such as
alcoves or closets and shall be installed with clearances in accordance with the
manufacturer's installation instructions, regardless of the type of
construction of such space. For the purposes of this section, a confined space
shall be any room or space having a volume less than 12 times the total volume
of furnaces or air-conditioning appliances, or less than 16 times the total
volume of boilers, installed therein. The total volume of appliances and boilers
shall be based on the exterior dimensions of such. Where the actual ceiling
height of the confined space exceeds 8 feet (2438 mm), the space volume shall be
based on a ceiling height of 8 feet (2438 mm).
M-405.[5] 6 Floor:
Appliances shall be installed on combustible or noncombustible flooring in
accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions and the terms
of labeling. A noncombustible floor, where required, shall extend a minimum of
12 inches (305 mm) beyond the sides of the appliance. The noncombustible floor
shall extend a minimum of 36 inches (914 mm) on the burner side or combustion
chamber opening side.
M-405.[6] 7 Remote location: A walkway having a
minimum width of 24 inches (610 mm) shall be provided, leading from the access
opening to the appliance where an appliance is installed in a remote
location.

M-406.3.1 Public garages: Appliances located in public
garages, service stations, repair garages or other areas frequented by motor
vehicles, shall be installed a minimum of 8 feet (2438 mm) above the floor.
Where motor vehicles exceed 6 feet (1829 mm) in height and are capable of
passing under an appliance, appliances shall be installed a minimum of 2 feet
(610 mm) higher above the floor than the highest vehicle.
Exception: The
requirements of this section shall not apply where the appliances are protected
from motor vehicle impact and installed in accordance with Section M-406.2 and
NFPA 88B.
M-406.3.2 Private garages: Appliances located in private
garages shall be installed with a minimum clearance of 6 feet (1829 mm) above
the floor.
Exception: The requirements of this section shall not apply
where the appliances are protected from motor vehicle impact and installed in
accordance with M-406.2.
[M-406.3.3 Protection alternative: Appliances
protected from motor vehicle impact shall be installed in accordance with
Section M-406.2 and NFiPA 88B listed in Chapter 21.]

M-407.2 Guards: Guards shall be provided where appliances,
equipment, fans or other components that require service are located within 10
feet (3048 mm) of a roof edge or open side [with a drop greater] of a walking
surface and such edge or open side is located more than [24] 30 inches ([610]
762 mm) above the floor, roof or grade below. The top of the guard shall be
located not less than 42 inches (1067 mm) above the elevated surface adjacent to
the guard. [and] The guard shall be constructed so as to prevent the passage of
a 21-inch-diameter (533 mm) sphere and shall comply with the loading
requirements for guards specified in the building code.
M-407.3 Access:
Access shall be [possible] maintained under all weather
conditions.

M-409.2 Convenience outlet: A 125-volt AC grounding-type
receptacle outlet shall be available for all appliances. The convenience outlet
shall be located on the same level within [75] 25 feet [(22860 mm)] (7620 mm) of
the appliance. The outlet shall not be connected to the load side of the
appliance disconnect switch.
